Course Overview

Learners credited with this unit standard are able to provide Basic Life Support.

Basic Life Support, as referred to in the

ANZCOR Guidelines https://www.nzrc.org.nz/guidelines is that phase of emergency care that either:

  • prevents respiratory or circulatory arrest or insufficiency through prompt recognition or intervention; or
  • supports the person to relieve an airway obstruction; or
  • supports the breathing and circulation of a person with cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and supports the person through accessing an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) where available.

Competence Achieved

Successful Learners receive:
NZQA Unit Standard 6402, Level 1, Credit 1 - Provide Basic Life Support

Course Outcomes

  • Any danger created by the environmental conditions to people present is identified and managed in terms of mitigating any hazardous situation(s).
  • Collapsed persons’ condition is assessed according to the ANZCOR Guidelines for Resuscitation
  • Management of the collapsed person is provided according to person’s condition.

  • Management of a foreign body airway obstruction is provided according to the ANZCOR Guidelines for Resuscitation.
