The unit includes the phase of emergency care that either: prevents respiratory or circulatory arrest or insufficiency through prompt recognition or intervention; or supports the victim to relieve an airway obstruction; or supports the breathing and circulation of a victim with cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). The ANZCOR Guidelines recommend that learners can be trained in basic life support providing that they are able to understand the principles and the technique(s), and are physically able to apply them.
