Course Overview

Background:
Psychological First Aid has been developed over a four-year period.

The development was lead by Graham Roper with assistance from others with the Lived Experience of Mental illness. This includes family /whanau members with lived experience. Consultation with clinicians (including; Doctors, Psychiatrists, Nurses, Psychologists, Counsellors) Maori and Pacifika, business leaders and many discussions with adults were also undertaken over this period.

Psychological First Aid is an appropriate organisational response to the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015; and the Acts identification of bullying, harassment and other risks to Mental Health and Wellbeing as a Health and Safety matter. It specifically meets the Government Wellness program for mental health initiatives; that people with the lived experience of Mental Health will help lead and be  part of any development of community programs. Psychological First Aid is developed to ensure all people have the level of understanding and knowledge to enable a permanent cultural shift within an organisation and community. Managers should not be in a position of isolation or be seen to have a power imbalance that would prevent the earliest intervention strategy that benefits all involved. While we can tailor sessions for leadership -these workshops are ultimately for everyone.

This is particular true in cases of bullying which feeds depression and can lead to suicide. Unlike other Mental Health/Psychological First Aid programs there are key points of difference in the process/program/course we offer:
• Led and developed by people with a lived experience of mental illness
• 4 hour workshops
• Learning team approach - facilitated discussion not scripted content
• Academically approved for micro-credentialing
